On July 4, 5 and 6, the FPGA conference in München takes place again. A leading specialist conference for programmable logic devices. The conference focuses on user-oriented, practically applicable solutions that developers can quickly integrate into their own everyday work. From TOPIC, Dirk van den Heuvel will present at the conference about how FPGA design decisions affect PCB board performance.
Presentation: How your FPGA design decisions affect PCB board performance
FPGA devices evolved over the last decades from low-complexity programmable logic devices into complex system-on-chips. The programmable functional density per square millimeter became very high as well as the power consumption and communication bit rates. This has also a tremendous impact on the board design. With the enormous flexibility in I/O configurations, drive capabilities, associated board components, etc. the programmability of the devices kick-back hard on the physical behavior and stability at board level.
This presentation will address the consequences of your FPGA implementation decisions at board level in terms of power consumption, power distribution, signal and power integrity, bit-error rates, induced noise levels, EMC effects, etc. Most important: how can board performance limiting aspects be solved by your FPGA design? These aspects are addressed using real-world experiences in the context of technology developments and projects executed by TOPIC.
As a designer of FPGA code, you can have a serious impact on the board design and mitigation of typical board issues. Join this talk for a reflection on consequences of trivial FPGA coding decisions.
